Sony Planning Sequel and All-Female Spinoff for ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’

Sequel will be directed by Joaquim Dos Santos of ‘Voltron’ fame; Lauren Montgomery in negotiations to direct untitled project assembling all the female heroes from the Spider-Man universe in one adventure.

Combining the in-house computer animation of Sony Pictures Imageworks with traditional hand-drawn comic book techniques, ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ swings into theaters on December 14.

Just weeks ahead of the film’s release in theaters, Sony Pictures Entertainment has revealed plans for both a sequel and a spinoff for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

According The Hollywood Reporter, the sequel will be directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, who is known for his work on Nickelodeon’s Avatar: The Last Airbender and Netflix’s Voltron: Legendary Defender. The script will be written by David Callaham, who wrote The Expendables and worked on Wonder Woman 1984 and Zombieland 2.

Meanwhile, Lauren Montgomery (The Legend of Korra, Voltron: Legendary Defender) is reportedly in negotiations to direct an as-yet untitled project that will assemble all the female heroes from the Spider-Man universe in one adventure. TV writer Bek Smith (CBS’s Zoo) will write the script.

Spider-Verse producer Amy Pascal will produce both new projects. Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the creative team behind Spider-Verse, are expected to be involved although a deal with them is still to be announced. Producers Avi Arad and Christina Steinberg are also anticipated to return in as-yet unnamed roles.

Created by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the creative minds behind The LEGO Movie and 21 Jump Street, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is directed by Peter Ramsey & Rodney Rothman from a script written by Lord. Employing a groundbreaking visual style that’s the first of its kind, the film introduces Brooklyn teen Miles Morales, and the limitless possibilities of the Spider-Verse, where more than one can wear the mask.

Swinging into theaters on December 14, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is produced by Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation in association with Marvel. The film features the voice talents of Shameik Moore as Miles Morales, Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen Stacy/Spider-Gwen, Mahershala Ali as Miles’ uncle Aaron Davis/Prowler, Jake Johnson as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Liev Schreiber as crime lord Wilson Fisk/Kingpin, Brian Tyree Henry as Miles’ father and police officer Jefferson Davis, Luna Lauren Velez as Myles’ mother Rio Morales, and Lily Tomlin as Peter’s aunt Mary Parker.
