As it stands this morning, the box office champ for the weekend of July 29-31 is too close to call. Both Universal's COWBOYS & ALIENS and Sony's THE SMURFS earned an approximate $36.2 million in their debut weekends.

Jon Favreau's genre mash-up has vfx from Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), Creature Effects, Halon Ent., Kerner Optical, Legacy Effects, Lidar Guys, Lightwave International and Shade VFX.

The comicstrip to live-action/CG hybrid adaptation has vfx from Sony Pictures Imageworks (SPI), Framestore, Lola Visual Effects, Tippett Studio, Drac Studios, Illusion Industries, The Base Studio and The Third Floor.

Paramount and Marvel's CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER fell to second with $24.9 million. With vfx from Double Negative, 4DMax, Evil Eye Pictures, FB-FX, Framestore, Fuel VFX, Gradient Effects, Hydraulx, Lola Visual Effects, Luma Pictures, Matte World Digital, Peanut FX, The Senate Visual Effects, Stereo D, The Base Studio, The Third Floor and Whiskytree, the WWII superhero epic has a cume of $116.8 million.

Warner Bros.' HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART 2 cast a spell on fourth place, bringing in another $21.9 million. With vfx from Double Negative, Framestore, Moving Picture Company (MPC), Baseblack, Cinesite, Gener8 3D, Gradient Effects, Lola Visual Effects, Mova, Peanut FX, Prime Focus Film, Rising Sun Pictures, The Base Studio, Tippett Studio, Union Visual Effects, The Visual Effects Company and i.e. Effects, the POTTER finale has a cume of $318.4 million.

Warner Bros.' romcom CRAZY, STUPID, LOVE. debuted in fifth with $19.3 million. Gravity provided the visual effects.

ScreenGem's FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS slipped to sixth from third, raising an additional $9.3 million. The raunchy romcom has total receipts of $38.2 million.

New Line's HORRIBLE BOSSES arrived in seventh with $7.1 million. The dark comedy has earned $96.2 million to date.

Paramount and DreamWorks' TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON plummeted from fourth to eighth place, capturing another $5.97 million. With vfx from Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), Digital Domain, Atomic Fiction, Kerner Optical, Method Studios, Mova, Prana Studios and Prime Focus, the global hit has brought in $337.9 million thus far.

Sony's ZOOKEEPER rounded up $4.2 million in ninth. With vfx from Sony Pictures Imageworks (SPI), Amalgamated Dynamics, Creative Initiative Make-Up & FX Studio, Framework Studio, Pixel Liberation Front and Pixomondo, the Kevin James comedy has racked up $68.7 million to date.

Disney*Pixar's CARS 2 finished off the top ten, making an additional $2.3 million. The animated racecar spy spoof has a cume of $182.1 million.
