THE HAPPENING On DVD And Blu-ray

From M. Night Shyamalan, the writer-director of THE SIXTH SENSE and SIGNS, comes a gripping thriller about a family on the run from a mysterious and deadly phenomenon. Academy Award nominee Mark Wahlberg (2006 Best Supporting Actor -- THE DEPARTED) stars as Elliot Moore, an ordinary man trying to save his family from a terrifying, invisible killer. As Elliot begins to discover the true nature of what is lurking out there, it soon becomes clear that no one -- and nowhere -- is safe. THE HAPPENING is on DVD and Blu-ray from Twentieth Century Fox Home Video.

Famously skeptical of digital effects, Shyamalan did as much as possible in frame, using wind machines, mechanical special effects and on set pyrotechnics whenever possible during the film's 44-day shoot last year in Pennsylvania.

For effects that couldn't be created on set, Shyamalan turned to VFX houses such as ILM and CafeFX, which created a number of memorable and gory sequences for the film.

David Ebner, vfx supervisor for CafeFX on the film, says Shyamalan's overriding goal for visual effects is that they be as convincing as possible.

"He's very critical of visual effects movies in general," Ebner observes. "He has a discerning eye and he wants everything to look real."

Accomplishing that took a lot of work on what Ebner says was CafeFX's most difficult sequence: a scene in which a group of zoo lions turn on their tamer and rip his arms off. The scene was short but complex, requiring previs and planning with the special effects and prosthetic effects crews to figure out how best to shoot it when safety requirements won't allow an actor to be alone on set with more than one lion at a time.

"And then we found out we couldn't actually use fake blood material either, because that would just get the lions going crazy, even if it wasn't real, Ebner added. "So we started planning that all that would be done in computer graphics as well."

In the shot, the lion tamer offers his hand out in friendship to the lions, only to have them attack. On set, the actor was offering the lion a prosthetic arm on a rod that he was controlling with his other arm.

"The part that gets ripped off is fake, but what we had to do then is patch the fact that you could see his other arm not doing the right thing," Ebner continued. "That involved removing his arms, the rod and replace the actor's shoulders and back. That was probably one of the harder parts of the job, was to cover him up."

Stand-up interviews from cast and crew personalize the piece with a glimpse at all the contributions needed to capture the scene and move on. --Visions of The Happening: A Making of (12 min.) -- Making of documentary--Deleted scenes with introductions from M. Will Grizzle help her friend or make even more trouble? And in "Emma's Dilemma" things are missing all over Care-a-lot. The Care Bears let Emma help them search, but she ends up missing, too, thanks to Grizzle. Can Emma and the bears find a way out of his trap?

"Care Bears Ups and Downs" also features two episodes "Cheer Up and "Down to Earth." In "Cheer Up," Cheer Bear decides to throw a party for Surprise. But she becomes uncheery when Surprise turns out to be unsurpriseable. So she distracts Surprise with "tasks" like picking flowers, hopping through town on one foot, and doing everything in reverse, so that the Bears can plan the party. In "Down To Earth," Wingnut's Care Bear Transporter beams Funshine to Earth so he can teach a lonely young boy how to make friends and have fun. But then the Care Bear Transporter breaks, and unless Wingnut can fix it, Funshine won't be able to return to Care-a-Lot.

STRAIT JACKET On DVD

On October 7, STRAIT JACKET will transport anime fans into a brand new world where anyone can use magic, and most abuse it. Those who cast too many spells risk becoming murderous, uncontrollable monsters, and all that's standing between order and chaos are specialized assassins -- monsters in their own right -- and their protective "Strait Jackets." Clad in a spectacular holographic "O-card," STRAIT JACKET promises a trip into the fantastic like no other, from Manga Ent. (a Starz Company).

Created by Ichiro Sakaki (SCRAPPED PRINCESS), STRAIT JACKET was a sensation from the moment it aired in Japan earlier this year. In a world where sorcery and science co-exist, the power of magic comes with a price: Humans who do not take proper precautions are transformed into horrific demons. Those who destroy these demons -- and run the highest risk of all -- are tactical sorcerers known as "Strait Jackets'. But when terrorists unleash a plague of demonic carnage, the Sorcery Management Bureau must enlist unlicensed assassin Leiot Steinberg to stop the slaughter. Even if this rogue killer and a mysterious young girl can end the outbreak, will they be able to face their own dark secrets?

Sakaki also wrote the screenplay for the feature, based on his original light novels, which to date have sold more than half a million copies in Japan.

STRAIT JACKET is produced by Feel (JINKI: EXTEND TV and KISSXSIS OVA) and directed by first-timer Shinji Ushiro. Character designs are by Yoshinori Yumoto (FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST, PLANETES), and boasts an all-star English dub cast, with Crispin Freeman (HELLSING, GHOST IN THE SHELL: STANDALONE COMPLEX) and Kari Wahlgren (SAMURAI CHAMPLOO, STEAMBOY).
