Shrek 2 & Spirit Director Goes Live Action With Thief of Always

SHREK 2 co-director Kelly Asbury has written and will direct the live-action screenplay adaptation of Clive Barker's THE THIEF OF ALWAYS for 20th Century Fox and Seraphim Films, according to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER.

Asbury and Barker met at an authors festival where Asbury was invited to discuss his nonfiction book DUMMY DAYS. Asbury and Barker struck up a conversation, which lead to Barker asking Asbury to write and direct the screen adaptation of his 1992 juvenile dark fantasy novel.

The story follows a bored 10-year-old boy who enters a supernatural house where all four seasons pass in one day.

The book was previously in development at Universal Pictures with Bernard Rose (CANDYMAN) directing and adapting the script. Before that it was in development as an animated movie with Kennedy Marshall at Paramount Pictures.

Asbury also directed SPIRIT: STALLION OF THE CIMARRON and served as an animation story artist on THE LITTLE MERMAID, TIM BURTON'S THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS, TOY STORY and JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH.

Barker is exec producing via his Seraphim Films. Vanessa Morrison is shepherding for Fox.
