Shilo Creates New Character Animation Spots for EA ‘The Sims 4’

Bi-coastal studio teams up with FCB West and EA to show more kooky ways to customize characters for the new version of the popular video game.

New York, NY and La Jolla, CA -- The filmmakers and artists at bi-coastal design production company Shilo have announced a new campaign for EA The Sims out of FCB West.

The campaign, which consists of one 30-second spot and six 15-second spots, features as many as 20 animated characters from the new The Sims game, which launched September 2. With the tagline “Theyʼre so smart theyʼre weird,” each spot is an engaging and wacky mini-lesson in what to do, or not to do, when creating your Sims character. From swagger to thunder thighs, holding grudges and everything in between, the spots illuminate just how advanced the capabilities of the new characters are.

“Draft/FCB approached us with the task of producing a number of character animated spots for them and we jumped at the chance as this is the kind of work that Shilo is known for,” said Shilo Executive Producer Cary Flaum.

Shilo hand-animated each character as opposed to using motion capture. “We really felt that we could achieve the most authentic movement with this technique,” says Founder/Executive Creative Director Jose Gomez. “The results are wonderfully funny and quirky characters each with distinctive personalities and mannerisms.”

This is not the first time that Shilo has collaborated with EA, having created several character animation-based spots for Sims and Mercenaries in recent years. For this campaign Shilo animated everything in Autodesk Maya 2014 and rendered using Solid Angle Arnold.
