Read: ‘State of the Industry: Visualizing a New Landscape for Artists’ Report

How far have we come? In a just released report, The Center for Scholars & Storytellers, BRIC Foundation and the Concept Art Association explore the race/ethnicity and gender identity of concept and visual development artists across animation, live-action, games, series, and movies/feature films.

Over the past several years, leaders in the entertainment industry have spearheaded efforts to promote diversity and inclusion to develop the landscape of concept and visual development artists while meeting the demand from audiences for stories that authentically reflect the truth and complexity of their varied experiences.

Just how far has the industry progressed? The Center for Scholars & Storytellers (CSS) has partnered with the BRIC Foundation and the Concept Art Association (CAA) to address this question and have published their findings in “State of the Industry: Visualizing a New Landscape for Artists,” a recently released report that explores the race/ethnicity and gender identity of concept and visual development artists across animation, live-action, games, series, and movies/feature films.

Check out the report here.

The report provides a compilation and analysis of publicly available data collected by the Concept Art Association, including the race/ethnicity and gender identities of artists within their network who were involved in a critically acclaimed or top box office creative project released between 2018-2022 in the Western world.

The report's stated goal is to start a conversation about a category of industry professionals that have not yet been considered concerning equity and inclusion – and to address the question of how far we have come and still have to go.
