Pokemon & Stuart Struggle For International BO

POKEMON: THE FIRST MOVIE and STUART LITTLE are struggling over who will nab the top spot at international box offices. For the week ending April 26, 2000, POKEMON took Spain and Italy. Around the globe POKEMON finished in 2nd in the U.K. in its second weekend in theatres; 3rd in Germany in its second weekend in theatres; and 4th in France and Sweden. Already in the U.K., POKEMON has grossed a total of $13.14 million in only one week of release. STUART LITTLE finished at #1 in Germany, Australia and Hong Kong. Elsewhere, LITTLE landed at #7 in Italy in its third weekend in theatres and #10 in Brazil and Sweden. Even though it finished in third in France, the Sony sensation made the most internationally over the weekend with a total take of US$3.02 million. Both films seem to be doing the same as they did in the States. STUART LITTLE has held strong in the top ten for months, whereas POKEMON starts big but quickly fades from the charts. THE TIGGER MOVIE is seeing success in its second week in several markets. The Disney toon finished third in the U.K. grossing US$1.9 million and bringing its British cume to $5.89 million. The Tigger vehicle finished 9th in Italy with a gross of $374,730, bringing its Italian cume to $387.322 million. The flick finished 4th in Australia adding $736,763 to a cume of $1.79 million. The pic stopped at #5 in Hong Kong with a gross of $90,808, raising its total gross to $365,837. In its first week, the new Winnie the Pooh adventure landed at #2 in Brazil making $433,198. International audiences are still taking in the toon titans of TOY STORY 2. The Disney/Pixar mega-hit finished in sixth in Japan and eighth in the U.K. TOY STORY 2 added $248,796 to its $9.7 million total in Japan and $371,1887 to its $67.83 million total in the U.K. Other special effects films finishing well in the international box office were THE GREEN MILE at #1 in Japan, with a gross of $1.03 million and a Japanese cume of $13.08 million, and the U.S. box office king U-571 finished at #3 in its first week in Australia with a gross of $1.43 million.
