Paramount+ Shares ‘Star Trek: Lower Decks’ S3 Trailer and Crossover Episode Tease

Mike McMahan’s animated comedy returns for its third season this August, and will collide with ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ in a live-action / animated episode in that hit show’s second season.

As part of this past Saturday’s San Diego Comic-Con 2022 “Star Trek Universe” Hall H panel, Star Trek: Lower Decks creator Mike McMahan introduced his show’s Season 3 trailer as well as all-new character portraits of the Lower Decks crew. The 2D animated comedy returns to Paramount+ with its third season’s U.S. premiere on August 25; the remaining nine episodes will stream weekly on Thursdays.

Paramount+ also announced that two of its Star Trek worlds will collide in a major crossover event planned for Season 2 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds - Star Trek: Lower Decks characters Ensign Beckett Mariner, voiced by Tawny Newsome, and Ensign Brad Boimler, voiced by Jack Quaid, will join the U.S.S. Enterprise in an episode, featuring live-action and animation, directed by Jonathan Frakes.

Created by Emmy Award winner McMahan (Rick and MortySolar Opposites), Star Trek: Lower Decks tells the story of the support crew serving on one of Starfleet’s least important ships, the U.S.S. Cerritos.

In the new season, ensigns are challenged in ways they could never imagine. According to the streamer, the series kicks off with a shocking resolution for last season’s epic cliffhanger finale.

In the series, the Starfleet crew residing in the “lower decks” of the U.S.S. Cerritos includes Ensign Mariner ;Ensign Boimler; Ensign Tendi, voiced by Noël Wells; and Ensign Rutherford, voiced by Eugene Cordero.

The Starfleet characters that comprise the U.S.S. Cerritos’ bridge crew include Captain Carol Freeman, voiced by Dawnn Lewis; Commander Jack Ransom, voiced by Jerry O’Connell; and Doctor T’Ana, voiced by Gillian Vigman.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds stars Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike; Rebecca Romijn as Number One; and Ethan Peck as Science Officer Spock. The series follows Captain Pike, Science Officer Spock and Number One in the years before Captain Kirk boarded the U.S.S. Enterprise, as they explore new worlds around the galaxy.

Star Trek: Lower Decks is produced by CBS’ Eye Animation Productions, CBS Studios’ new animation arm; Secret Hideout; and Roddenberry Entertainment. Secret Hideout’s Alex Kurtzman and Heather Kadin, Roddenberry Entertainment’s Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth and Katie Krentz (219 Productions) serve as executive producers alongside creator and showrunner McMahan. Aaron Baiers (Secret Hideout), who brought McMahan to the project, also serves as an executive producer.
