Lionsgate is looking at Oscar nominated young actresses to headline its HUNGER GAMES, reports Variety. Jennifer Lawrence (WINTER'S BONE), Hailee Steinfeld (TRUE GRIT) and Abigail Breslin (LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE) are the top contenders. Variety states that the whole direction of the film will be based on whom they cast in the lead due to the actress's age. Lawrence is 20, while Steinfeld and Breslin are both 14.
Based on Suzanne Collins' bestseller and adapted by Billy Ray, the story is set in a future where an annual fight to the death is aired live on TV. Gary Ross is directing. The film is set to arrive in theaters on March 23, 2012.
