Ortega and Ma Create Halloween Magic with 'The Green Ruby Pumpkin'

Just in time for Halloween, former Digital Domain senior VFX artists Miguel Ortega and Tran Ma create a fun and magical animated short, 'The Green Ruby Pumpkin.'

The Green Ruby Pumpkin is a fun and magical short film that captures the enchantment of Halloween. A passion project created by two former Digital Domain senior visual effects artists, Miguel Ortega and Tran Ma, the animated short -- shot entirely in a living room -- blends CG and stylized 2D effects to populate a magical world full of fairy tale and Halloween characters come to life.

Ortega, the director, and Ma, the production designer, say the project was “rendered on seven computers, running Maya for 3D, Mudbox for sculpting, Mari and Mudbox for Texture Painting, V-Ray for rendering, and Nuke for compositing. A lot of shortcuts had to be used in order to manage our render times, including 3D projections in Nuke, miniatures, and practical elements. The majority of the VFX work was just us two, however, we had great help from friends on the rigging and animation side of things. We wanted to make sure everything you see on screen was designed and or fabricated by our team.”
