Not To Scale & Elliot Lim Bring Fun to the Fair

Award-winning film and animation production company teams with director Elliot Lim and agency Campbell Ewald to deliver a whimsical 2D short featuring playful character design and a warm and accessible illustrative style.

The Great New York State Fair and agency Campbell Ewald recently approached film and animation production company Not To Scale New York to create a short film inspired by the main reason people are drawn to the fair: fun!

Directed by Elliot Lim, the animated, illustrative spot extols the virtues of the event in a fun and humorous way, communicating a visiting family’s enjoyment while also being itself a joy to watch. Comical details mixed with beautiful design means the spot appeals to children, families and adults alike, showing off the myriad of activities and entertainment available to the Fair’s visitors.

Lim introduces playful character design and bright colors in a warm and accessible art style, while humorous moments take place both front and center and more subtly in the background. A balance of cuts and transitions add some unexpectedness to the animation and help keep up the narrative pace while also adding a sense of whimsy.

“The aesthetic needed to be simple and expressive in order to provide a quick read for each scene,” Lim commented. “The illustrative, character-based animation and smooth, wandering camera moves are aspects that I really enjoy.”
