Up Nominated for Best Picture Oscar

Only the second time in Oscar history, an animated feature has been nominated for Best Picture. UP is among the other nine nominees, which include AVATAR, THE BLIND SIDE, DISTRICT 9, AN EDUCATION, THE HURT LOCKER, INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS, PRECIOUS, A SERIOUS MAN and UP IN THE AIR.

UP will also compete in the Best Animated Feature category along with CORALINE, FANTASTIC MR. FOX, THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG, and the surprise nominee THE SECRET OF KELLS.

As for the Best Animated Short Film category, the nods went to FRENCH ROAST, GRANNY O'GRIMM'S SLEEPING BEAUTY, THE LADY AND THE REAPER, LOGORAMA, and A MATTER OF LOAF AND DEATH. Surprising snubs include NFB's RUNAWAY and Pixar's PARTLY CLOUDY.

In the Visual Effects category, Best Picture nominees AVATAR and DISTRICT 9 are joined by STAR TREK.

Animated films landed in other categories as well. UP also garnered nominations for Best Original Score (Michael Giacchino), Sound Editing (Michael Silvers and Tom Myers), and Best Original Screenplay (Screenplay Bob Peterson, Pete Docter, Story by Bob Peterson, Pete Docter, Tom McCarthy). UP will be joined in the Best Original Score by FANTASTIC MR. FOX (Alexandre Desplat). THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG earned two Best Original Song nods for Randy Newman's "Almost There" and "Down in New Orleans."
