Iconic game character’s creator, Shigeru Miyamoto, and Chris Meledandri will co-produce planned feature.
Nintendo of America confirmed on Twitter production of an animated movie starring its flagship game character, Mario, in conjunction with Illumination Entertainment.
The movie will be co-produced by Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto and Illumination’s Chris Meledandri.
A press release stated Universal Pictures, which owns Illumination, will distribute the film worldwide.
Mario and has starred in more than 200 Nintendo video games, dating back to Donkey Kong in 1981, selling more than 500 million units worldwide.
The live-action feature Super Mario Bros. was released in 1993 by Disney and was a box-office flop.
No release date or other details about the movie were released.
