The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences first acknowledged the potential of animated features at the 11th Academy Awards in 1939, when Walt Disney received an Honorary Oscar for his groundbreaking motion picture Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs. In the following decades, other animated features were occasionally honored with Special Achievement awards. The modern category of The Best Animated Feature launched in 2002 at the 74th Academy Awards, with producer Aron Warner receiving the iconic gold statuette for DreamWorks Pictures’ Shrek.

Established in 1927 with Douglas Fairbanks as its first president, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is an international community of over 10,000 artists, filmmakers, and executives. The 95th Academy Awards takes place on Sunday, March 12, 2023, at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood.
