New Directors, First Look and Release Date for Disney’s ‘Raya and the Last Dragon’

Don Hall and Carlos López Estrada take the helm, sans Dean Wellins, with Paul Briggs now co-directing on the highly anticipated animated feature set for March 12, 2021 theatrical release.

Walt Disney Animation Studios has just unveiled their first look at warrior Raya and her trusty steed Tuk Tuk, from the upcoming animated adventure, Raya and the Last Dragon. The film’s originally scheduled November 25, 2020 release was pushed due to the COVID-19 pandemic; it’s now scheduled to hit U.S. theaters on March 12, 2021.

Awkwafina, the voice of the dragon, Sisu, will be joined by Kelly Tran as the voice of Raya. On the production side, we see some big changes: Paul Briggs and Dean Wellins, originally named as directors, have been replaced by Don Hall and Carlos López Estrada. Briggs will still co-direct, but with newly added John Ripa. Wellins appears to be off the film at this point. Osnat Shurer and Peter Del Vecho will produce; Qui Nguyen and Adele Lim are the film’s writers.
