New Animated Series ‘Ghetto Brilliance’ in Development from ‘Dave’ Star GaTa

The show, which draws inspiration from its creator’s early life in South Central L.A., is being developed by Disney-owned content brand Onyx Collective.

Davionte “GaTa” Ganter, star of the FXX comedy Dave, is developing an animated series for Onxy Collective entitled Ghetto Brilliance. 20th Television will produce in association with 3 Arts.

GaTa first announced the project during Deadline’s recent Deadline Contenders panel, which focused on Dave. (Deadline first reported the news.)

“I’m working on this cartoon right now, it’s in development with Onyx Collective and it’s gonna be amazing,” GaTa said. “I just want to say this bro, I’m really living my dreams bro. I’m performing at Lollapalooza, I just had a sold out show, and [Dave’s Lil] Dicky was my hype man,” he said.

Ghetto Brilliance is also the title of GaTa’s 2017 hip-hop album. The series will be based on GaTa’s experiences coming of age in South Central Los Angeles.

Maxwell Theodore Vivian, (Amazon’s Upload, NBC’s American Auto) will serve as writer and executive producer. 3 Arts’ Ari Lubet and Jermaine Johnson will also executive produce, alongside Vivian, GaTa, Mike Hertz, and Daniel C. Katz.

Onyx Collective is a Disney-owned brand that specializes in curated content for creators of color and underrepresented voices. Run by Freeform President Tara Duncan, it reportedly won GaTa’s project in a “highly competitive process.”
