Netflix Greenlights ‘Ghostbusters’ Animated Series

The project from Sony Pictures Animation will be executive produced by franchise vets Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan, while Elliott Kalan will serve as writer, showrunner, and executive producer; plot details are under wraps.

After two years on ice, Netflix has greenlit the Ghostbusters animated series first announced in 2022. Elliott Kalan will serve as writer, showrunner, and executive producer, according to sources close to Variety. Plot and casting details are currently under wraps.

It was previously reported that the project, from Sony Pictures Animation, would be executive produced by Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan of Ghost Corps, Inc. (co-writers of Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire).

The series is the third animated project spawned by the Ghostbusters franchise since Ivan Reitman’s original film was released in 1984. The first show to utilize the medium, The Real Ghostbusters, ran for 140 episodes from 1986-1991. A 1997 follow-up, Extreme Ghostbusters, spanned 40 episodes and featured a new generation of college-aged Ghostbusters, schooled in the ways of spectral snatching by series mainstay Dr. Egon Spengler (voiced by Maurice LaMarche).

Netflix and Ghost Corps, Inc. will oversee production. A release date has not been announced.
