Coming this fall from ‘The Book of Life’ director, the ‘Animated Event Told in 9 Chapters,’ tells the story of a Mesoamerican-inspired warrior princess on an epic quest to fulfill an ancient prophecy and save humanity from the vengeful gods of the underworld.
This past October, Netflix announced an expanded original content development partnership with Jorge Gutiérrez (The Book of Life, El Tigre), the Emmy Award-winning and Golden Globe-nominated animator, painter, writer, and director, and his production company Mexopolis. The deal calls for Gutiérrez to write, direct, and produce new animated films, series, and interactive projects across preschool, kids & family and adult animation.
We finally get to glimpse a bit more of the acclaimed creator’s inaugural Netflix project, as the streamer has just shared a couple “Sneak Peek” images from Maya and the Three – An Animated Event Told in 9 Chapters, coming this Fall.
Set in a fantastical world filled with magic, a Mesoamerican-inspired warrior princess embarks on an epic quest to fulfill an ancient prophecy and save humanity from the vengeful gods of the underworld.
According to Gutiérrez, “As a lifelong lover of fantasy films from around the world and deeply inspired by the glorious Mesoamerican art and exhibits of the Museo Nacional de Antropologia in my hometown of Mexico City, I created Maya as our own fiercely rebellious Eagle Warrior Princess. Our young heroine is lovingly inspired by the real Mexican warrior women in my life: my mother, sister and my eternal muse, my wife. I cannot wait for audiences of all ages from around the world to join Maya and the Three on their funny, heartfelt, and epic quest to vanquish the underworld gods to save their magical world. For anyone who loved El Tigre and The Book of Life, you are in for a spicy treat!"
Created, directed, and executive produced by Gutiérrez, the series is written by Gutiérrez, Silvia Olivas, Doug Langdale, and Candie Kelty Langdale; produced by Tim Yoon; co-executive produced by Olivas and Jeff Ranjo; with music by Gustavo Santaolalla and Tim Davies. Sandra Equiahua serves as a creative consultant; Candie Kelty Langdale and Doug Langdale serve as consulting producers.
Gutiérrez and Equiahua will also be presenting a Work in Progress session on the series next Tuesday, June 15, at Annecy 2021. More details can be found here.
