Musical Artist Bad Bunny to Star in Sony’s ‘El Muerto’

The rough and ready film, based on the Marvel comics anti-hero, follows a luchador who inherits superpowers; Jonás Cuarón directs from a script penned by Gareth Dunnet Alcocer.

For the first time ever, a Latino character will take the lead in a Marvel film. Sony’s upcoming live-action superhero film El Muerto will star musical artist Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, aka Bad Bunny, as the son of a luchador who is set to inherit the ancestral superpowers of his bloodline. The character El Muerto originally appeared in the Spider-Man universe as an antihero, but something tells us he will win the hearts of the (female) audience.

The rough and ready film will be directed by Jonás Cuarón (Desierto), while the script will be penned by Gareth Dunnet Alcocer (Blue Beetle). As the project is still in early development, not much else is known of the cast or plot. However, the ever-expanding Sony Pictures Marvel universe will also include the upcoming Kraven the Hunter film, set to release on October 6, 2023, and Madame Web, set for a February 16, 2024 release.

Sony has not yet released details on who will handle the VFX.

El Muerto is set to release theatrically on January 12, 2024.
