MTV Movie Awards To honor Best Virtual Performance

THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE TWO TOWERS and SPIDER-MAN got five nominations apiece to lead the list of contenders for MTV's 2003 MOVIE AWARDS. The 12th edition of the awards will honor a new generation of performers in a new category: best virtual performance. Nominees include Yoda in STAR WARS: EPISODE II - ATTACK OF THE CLONES, Gollum in THE TWO TOWERS, Dobby in HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS, Kangaroo Jack in KANGAROO JACK and Scooby-Doo in SCOOBY-DOO.THE TWO TOWERS is nominated for Best Movie along with SPIDER-MAN, 8 MILE, BARBERSHOP and THE RING.

Others vying multiple nods were 8 MILE, DAREDEVIL, AUSTIN POWERS IN GOLDMEMBER, BARBERSHOP and JACKASS: THE MOVIE. Nominees for Best Action Sequence are: FINAL DESTINATION 2 - Collision on Highway 23, THE TWO TOWERS - The Battle for Helms Deep, MINORITY REPORT - The Escape and STAR WARS: EPISODE II - ATTACK OF THE CLONES - The Arena Conflict

The nominees for the 2003 MTV MOVIE AWARDS were chosen by viewers via a national pool. The winners will be chosen by viewers as well via phone or online voting underway now at www.mtv.com. Also, for the first time, Virgin Mobile subs will be able to vote via their cell phones.

Tenth Planet Productions' Gallen and Salli Frattini will exec produce the awards show, which Bruce Gowers will direct and Michael Dempsey will co-produce. The ceremony tapes at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on May 31, 2003 to air June 3, 2003 at 9:00 pm (ET/PT).
