MPC to Showcase Feature VFX at SIGGRAPH 2015

MPC Film heads to SIGGRAPH 2015 to present crowd, fur, digi-doubles and destruction technology, presenting the company’s visual effects work on movies including ‘Terminator Genisys,’ ‘Exodus: Gods and Kings,’ ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ and ‘Cinderella.’

Crowds and Complexity: A Modular Crowd (n)Cloth System for Exodus: Gods and Kings

For “Exodus: Gods and Kings”, to simulate cloth on crowds of up to 200,000 agents, MPC changed the way the base meshes were made and implemented a modular crowd cloth system.

Capturing the World: Roundshot Pipeline at MPC

For Godzilla and many upcoming films at MPC, hundreds of panoramic images were acquired and a proper pipeline was needed to supply departments with quick previews and automated stitching.

Got ‘Bots: X-Men Days of Future Past: Directing a Highly Complex Shape-Shifting Sentinel

The Sentinel is covered with 100,000 blades and cannot be animated using traditional methods. The MPC team introduced the concept of follicles that approximated blade models and combined them into animate-able follicle-meshes from which particles were derived. These particles were then ingested by Katana, where this complex character was assembled.

In this session MPC will go over the strategy of using Fabric Engine as the foundation for their VFX software. MPC will also give some concrete examples as to where it currently use Fabric in production and share some new direction they are taking with it.

Best of GTC Theatre: Dekko: A framework for Real-Time Preview for VFX

In this session MPC will discuss the challenge and benefits of interactively visualizing large scenes in modern big budget VFX-driven movies. MPC will share some examples of the scale and complexity the experienced in their recent productions at MPC and the value of being able to visualize them without the need to go through long offline render processes. MPC will show initial results of the company’s work done using NVIDIA's Optix framework and Fabric Engine to assemble and render large scenes in an interactive environments taking advantage of the power of high end GPUs.

Follow the Crowd: Destroying the Pharaoh’s Army - Large-Scale Dynamics in Exodus

MPC updated its in-house software and the underlying Bullet physics engine to handle hundreds of chariots, cavalry, and soldiers crashing, breaking, and tumbling down a collapsing mountain for Exodus: Gods and Kings.
