MPC Completes Post for Toyota

Press Release from MPC

Brett Foraker has directed RANGE UNVEILED, Toyota's latest commercial which uses a classical cloth illusion to uncover each model in Toyota's line. MPC provided the post including extensive cloth simulation for the ad which was produced by Ciaran Bennett at CHI and Partners and Annabel Ridley at RSA.

Using a classic illusion with a modern twist, this film executes the ultimate sleight of hand as the viewer witnesses Toyota's range unveiled by the simple act of pulling on a piece of cloth.

"We always thought of this ad as a sort of magic trick," says Director Brett Foraker. "The goal was to combine several post and in-camera effects to create something that was inherently warm and humanistic. To that end you couldn't ask for better collaborators than MPC. Aside from their great technical ability, they approach each project with a sense of playfulness that really sets them apart. Xavier, Jay, Chris and the 3D team were real assets to us throughout the whole process."

MPC was involved from an early stage, creating a comprehensive 3D pre-viz to test to work out what camera move should be applied to the differently sized cars and how and when the reveals would therefore take place. Cloth passes were shot for lighting reference and later modelled and animated in 3D. CG and Flame set extensions were created and matte painting was used for the archway. Several passes were taken of the cars and skies which were composited together to develop the final sequence. The motion control rig and its reflections were removed and some beauty passes were added.

A final grade was added by George K to create a more environmental, duskier look.

The commercial will be on air from 4th April 2009 in the UK.
