Max Cancels ‘Velma’ After 2 Seasons

The streamer axes Mindy Kaling and Charlie Grandy’s adult animated comedy series, a reimagining of the classic 1970’s animated mystery series ‘Scooby-Doo.’

Ruh Roh! It’s pretty spooky when a series’ Halloween special contains a prescient story line for the show’s future. In Velma: This Halloween Needs to Be More Special!, now streaming on Max, the friends have just 24 hours to bring Velma back, and in order to do so, they search for a dark spell book while trying to avoid the wrath of a vengeful spirit.

Velma’s Halloween liberation only forestalled the inevitable. Max has just canceled Mindy Kaling and Charlie Grandy’s adult animated reimagining of the classic 1970’s animated mystery series Scooby-Doo after just two seasons. Both seasons along with the Halloween special are currently streaming.

Contacted by AWN, Max issued the following statement:

“Over the past two seasons, Mindy [Kaling] and Charlie [Grandy] have created an incredibly fun and fresh world within the iconic whodunit franchise. While we won’t be moving forward with another season of the series, we thank them for their compelling coming-of-age storytelling, unrivaled clues, and hilarious hijinks.”

The show stars the voices of Kaling, Glenn Howerton, Sam Richardson, and Constance Wu. Additional cast includes Russell Peters; Sarayu Blue; Jane Lynch; Wanda Sykes; Frank Welker; Nicole Byer; Gary Cole; Andia Winslow; Sara Ramirez; Nicholas Braun; Fortune Feimster; Jennifer Hale; Richard Kind; Jason Mantzoukas; Saweetie; Debby Ryan; and Kulap Vilaysack.

Grandy is the show’s developer, writer and serves as executive producer alongside Kaling, Howard Klein, Elijah Aron, and Sam Register. Jessica Kumai Scott is co-executive producer, Amy Winfrey is supervising producer, Kandace Reuter is producer; and Greg Gallant is co-producer. Adam Parton and Meg Waldow directed.
