Matrix Revolutions Takes In $43.1M Worldwide On 1st Day

THE MATRIX REVOLUTIONS made its worldwide debut on Nov. 5, 2003, taking in $43.1 million from 18,000 screens. The final installment in the cyber saga brought in $24.3 million in the U.S. and Canada where it played in 3,502 theaters. This amount makes it the third biggest Wednesday bow of all time in North America behind only STAR WARS: EPISODE I - THE PHANTOM MENACE ($28.5M) and THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE TWO TOWERS ($26.2M). In terms of best North American opening day of all time REVOLUTIONS just missed the top ten at #11.

However, this take is a decline from the first day receipts of THE MATRIX RELOADED, which brought in $37.5 million on Thursday, May 15 of this year. However, the original MATRIX only made $4.8 million in its premiere on Wednesday, March 31, 1999. RELOADED boasts the second biggest opening weekend ever at $91.8 million, and has drummed up $281.6 million total. In comparison, THE MATRIX scored little over what REVOLUTIONS made in its first day over its first weekend, bringing in $27.8 million, but word of mouth extended its run in cinemas bringing its final take to $171.5 million.
