LOOK Effects produces over 250 VFX shots visual effects for Draft Day, the new Kevin Costner film directed by Ivan Reitman.
LOS ANGELES -- LOOK Effects announced that they produced the visual effects for the new Kevin Costner film, Draft Day, which opened last Friday, April 11th.
Directed by Ivan Reitman, the film covers the 24 hours of the NFL draft day. General Manager Sonny Weaver (Costner) has the opportunity to rebuild his team when he trades for the number-one pick. He must quickly decide what he’s willing to sacrifice in pursuit of perfection, as the lines between his personal and professional life become blurred on what is a life-changing day for a few hundred young men with dreams of playing in the NFL.
"Draft Day is the kind of project LOOK excels at,” says visual effects supervisor Mat Krentz. “We did over 250 shots that fit seamlessly into the live action. The work we did – and solutions we offered the director – allowed them to tell the story they wanted to tell within their schedule and budget.”
Draft Day took great advantage of pre-existing footage and actual events to cut production time and costs. “They shot the real Draft Day 2013 and we replaced the banners and signs in post,” explains Krentz. “The story references a game that took place in the past. We used footage from real games and digitally changed the jersey numbers and the names of the characters. This meant the production had to shoot only the close-up shots, saving them an enormous amount of time and money.”
With offices in Los Angeles, New York, Vancouver and Stuttgart, Germany, LOOK Effects has provided visual effects for films including Noah, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Warm Bodies, Life of Pi, Moonrise Kingdom, The Muppets, Captain America, Limitless, and The King’s Speech, and the company’s work for Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan was nominated for both VES and BAFTA awards for visual effects. Television credits include: “Bones,” “Game of Thrones,” “Nashville,” “Castle,” “The Finder,” the Emmy-nominated effects for “Life After People” and all of the VES-nominated effects for the final season of “Lost.”
