LAIKA’s ‘Kubo and the Two Strings’ Wins Animated Feature BAFTA Award

LAIKA head and ‘Kubo’ director and producer Travis Knight receives the studio’s first BAFTA Award; Disney’s The Jungle Book awarded for Special Visual Effects.

The winners of the EE British Academy Film Awards have been announced at the ceremony hosted by Stephen Fry at the Royal Albert Hall, London, on Sunday, February 12, 2017.

The ceremony was hosted for a 12th year by Stephen Fry and held at London’s Royal Albert Hall, and featured performances by Cirque du Soleil and Sheku Kanneh-Mason, winner of the BBC Young Musician 2016.

The BAFTA Award for animated feature went to LAIKA’s stop-motion/CG hybrid film, Kubo and the Two Strings, beating out Pixar’s Finding Dory, and Disney’s Moana and Zootropolis. (as Zootopia is known as outside the U.S.) The BAFTA Award for British Short Animation was given to stop-motion short A Love Story by Anushka Kishani Naanayakkara, Khaled Gad and Elena Ruscombe-King.

Disney’s The Jungle Book received the BAFTA for Special Visual Effects, with the award going to Robert Legato, Dan Lemmon, Andrew R. Jones and Adam Valdez. Other nominees in the VFX category were Arrival, Doctor Strange, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Arrival received the award for Sound, Hacksaw Ridge won for Editing, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them collected the BAFTA for Production Design, Florence Foster Jenkins took the award for Make Up and Hair, and Jackie won Costume Design.
