Kevin Smith’s Animated ‘Masters of the Universe: Revelation’ Coming to Netflix

Famed ‘Clerks and ‘Chasing Amy’ director to serve as showrunner and executive producer of new limited anime series, produced with Mattel TV, focused on unresolved 1980s era ‘He-Man’ storylines.

Netflix, Kevin Smith and Mattel Television are joining forces to bring the thunderous battle-cry, “By the power of Grayskull!” back into our lives with yesterday’s Power-Con Convention announcement of Masters of the Universe: Revelation, a limited anime series set in the “He Man” toy franchise world. Smith will serve as showrunner and executive producer of the show, a wholly original story that will focus on unresolved storylines from the classic ‘80s era, picking up many of the characters’ journeys where they left off decades ago.

Smith, half the famed Jay and Silent Bob duo and director of films like Clerks, Chasing Amy and Dogma, commented, “I’m Eternia-ly grateful to Mattel TV and Netflix for entrusting me with not only the secrets of Grayskull, but also their entire Universe. In Revelation, we pick up right where the classic era left off to tell an epic tale of what may be the final battle between He-Man and Skeletor! Brought to life with the most metal character designs Powerhouse Animation can contain in the frame, this is the Masters of the Universe story you always wanted to see as a kid!”

The series is being produced by Mattel Television with Rob David, VP of Mattel TV and author of “He-Man: the Eternity War,” serving as an executive producer. Eric Carrasco (Supergirl), Tim Sheridan (Reign of the Supermen), Diya Mishra (Magic the Gathering) and Marc Bernardin (Alphas) have come on board as writers.  Animation is being produced by Texas-based 2D specialists Powerhouse Animation; the studio also handles animation production on Castlevania, another Netflix anime series produced by Frederator Studios.

Masters of the Universe has been a cultural phenomenon for generations, inspiring fans to discover their own power within,” David noted. “Fans of this franchise have been waiting for the continuation of these characters, and Kevin Smith, as a Masters superfan himself, is the perfect champion and partner to expand the canon through a dynamic animated series on Netflix.”

Since Mattel first brought He-Man’s heroic battles against evil sorcerer Skeletor to audiences in 1982, the property has spawned a multi-billion dollar franchise that includes numerous toys, games, comics, TV series and feature films; the most recent entry is DreamWorks Animation and Netflix’s She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, starring the action hero’s sister and based on the 1985 series, She Ra, Princess of Power.

The new series reveal adds to Netflix’s growing slate of anime content, which includes global hits such as Castlevania, Devilman Crybaby, Aggretsuko, and Ultraman.
