Disney+ Obi-Wan Kenobi miniseries faces dubious rumors of cancellation, delays and drama.
The Skywalker Saga may be over, but Disney will ensure the Force can never die. Three live-action series have been announced for Disney+, with The Mandalorian already proving to be a huge success. The Star Wars series with the most buzz, however, is the Obi-Wan Kenobi miniseries set to start filming this year. The show, starring Ewan McGregor (Star Wars Episode I-III, Moulin Rouge!) reprising his role as the infamous Jedi Obi-Wan, has recently fallen victim to whispers of series cancellation. While the rumors originating on Twitter turned out to be incredibly false, there still seems to be trouble brewing on Tattooine.
Many media outlets claim filming delays due to project conflicts, creative differences, and the vaguest of all, "drama." If Ewan McGregors’ appearance at the Golden Globes is anything to go by, however, Kenobi seems to be going right on schedule. We are confident Kenobi will arrive on Disney+ safe and sound. Afterall, if you strike down Old Ben, he will become more powerful than we could ever imagine.
The Obi-Wan miniseries, being referred to simply as Kenobi, has no official premiere date or episode count; Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy has announced, however, that all the scripts are written. The story takes place between Episode III and Episode IV, after the slaughter of the Jedi, when Obi-Wan hunkers down in Tattooine for a spot of self-imposed exile. When we see him again in Episode IV he is Old Ben, played by Alec Guinness. We’re curious to see his evolution during this previously unknown and mysterious time.
Deborah Chow (The Mandalorian, American Gods) is set to direct the series, with Hossein Amini serving as writer. Kennedy and Chow will produce, and will be joined by Jason D. McGatlin, Tracey Seaward, and John Swartz.
