Josh Friedman to Pen ‘Fantastic Four’ Rewrite

The ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ writer has taken the reins from former scribes Jeff Kaplan and Ian Springer, which signals a potential shift away from comedy towards a more serious sci-fi tone.

Trouble in the Marvel-verse? Josh Friedman (Avatar: The Way of Water, Snowpiercer) has been tapped to rewrite the script of the upcoming Fantastic Four remake. Previous writers Jeff Kaplan (The Last of the Great Romantics) and Ian Springer (Bert and Arnie’s Guide to Friendship) are best known for their comedy chops; the scribe swap, while currently unexplained, may signal an overall shift towards a more serious sci-fi tone.

The Fantastic Four comics, written by Stan Lee, follow a superpowered squad composed of stretchy scientist Reed Richards, his invisible wife Sue Storm, human torch Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm, aka The Thing. Unfortunately, a cast has yet to be announced, but rumors continue to run rampant (and be proven false).

Matt Shakman (WandaVision) will direct as well as produce alongside Kevin Feige. In a seemingly continuous revolving door of creatives, Shakman had replaced Jon Watts (director on the last three Spider-Man films) as director. Production will kick off early next year.

Fantastic Four is set to flame on into theaters Feb. 14, 2025.
