Jorge Gutierrez Departs as Director of 'LEGO Movie' Spinoff

Filmmaker best known for ‘Book of Life’ says split from WB project was amicable.

Jorge R. Gutierrez has reported on social media that he is no longer directing The LEGO Movie spinoff feature, The Billion Brick Race.

He posted on Facebook a change of employment status indicating he left his job as a director at Warner Bros. Animation. That change was later removed, though his work and education page showed his tenure at WBA ended in February 2018.

He confirmed to AWN that he had departed the movie and that the split was amicable, providing the following quote:

I would like to publicly and from the bottom of my heart thank everyone I worked with at Briksburg, Lego and WAG. These last 9 months were a rollercoaster of thrills to say the least. I met so many amazing new people and learned a ton from all these incredible artists, directors, writers, editors, producers and execs. I leave a better filmmaker and it’s because of you all. May our paths cross again. Gracias mis amigos. And as I toasted on my first day there, “May we slip n slide on the blood of our enemies!!!”

Gutierrez’s involvement was announced in August. He is best known as the director of the feature The Book of Life and creator of the animated series El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera.

His other projects include the feature Kung Fu Space Punch, which is yet to have a release date set.
