Jon Spaihts to Pen ‘Gears of War’ Film for Netflix

The ‘Dune’ and ‘Doctor Strange’ writer has boarded the popular video game adaptation that follows the Delta Squad, led by badass Marcs Fenix, in humanity’s last stand against the Locust alien race.

All hail the king of adaptations! Jon Spaihts (Dune, Doctor Strange, The Mummy), known for penning highly successful film scripts based on books, comics, and even reboots of earlier films, has boarded yet another adaptation; this time for the popular video game franchise Gears of War.

Gears of War is one of the all-time great action games, with vivid characters, a beautifully designed world, and a combat system that drives home the lethality of war and the importance of standing by your squadmates,” Spaihts said in a statement to Variety. “It wants to be cinema, and I’m thrilled to have the chance to help that happen.”

The Gears video game franchise follows the Delta Squad, led by badass Marcs Fenix, in humanity’s last stand against the Locust alien race. Spaihts’ script is the latest cinematic project based on the franchise; New Line Cinema previously held the film rights in 2007, and Universal began development on a script in 2018, but nothing proved fruitful.

Gears of War is produced in a collaboration between Netflix and The Coalition and is just the beginning of an entire franchise plan. If all goes well, the film will be followed by an adult animated series with potential for even more content.

“We’re thrilled to partner with Jon and the Netflix team to bring Gears of War to life,” stated The Coalition. “Jon is a master storyteller with a talent for creating epic, science-fiction universes, and he truly loves ‘Gears of War.’ We couldn’t ask for a better partner to honor our franchise and deliver an authentic story to our fans.”
