Jodie Turner-Smith Joins the Cast of ‘Tron: Ares’

The ‘Queen & Slim’ actress joins a growing list of actors already boasting Jared Leto, Evan Peters, and Greta Lee; the live-action ‘Tron: Legacy’ sequel begins shooting this August in August in Vancouver.

Is your lightcycle ready? The cast list just got bigger on Tron: Ares, the upcoming thematic sequel to Tron: Legacy now underway at Disney. Joining Jared Leto on the grid is Evan Peters (Dahmer), Greta Lee (Past Lives), and now Jodie Turner-Smith (Queen & Slim, The Acolyte). The project, which has faced years of development trials and tribulations,l now aims for to begin shoots this August in Vancouver.

Leto plays Ares, the manifestation of the “program,” while Lee stars as a videogame programmer and tech company CEO on the run to protect her tech. According to the studio, the film focuses “on the emergence of a sentient program that crosses over into the human world that is not ready for contact.”

The sci-fi franchise began with 1982’s ground-breaking Tron, starring Jeff Bridges as Kevin Flynn, a man teleported into his own video game, who must team with security program Tron to survive. The 2010 sequel Tron: Legacy, helmed by Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski, also starred Bridges, in addition to Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde, and included an impressive 1,565 VFX shots, 882 created by Digital Domain (723 in Venice and 159 in Vancouver).

Tron: Ares is helmed by frequent Disney collaborator Joachim Rønning (Maleficent: Mistress of Evil and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) from a script by Jesse Wigutow (It Runs in the Family) and Jack Thorne.

Justin Springer and Jeffrey Silver produce alongside Emma Ludbrook and Leto for their production company Paradox. Russell Allen executive produces.
