Jared Leto to Lead Disney’s ‘Tron: Ares’ Sequel

The upcoming film in the decades-spanning sci-fi franchise is being penned by Jesse Wigutow, with ‘Maleficent: Mistress of Evil’ director Joachim Rønning in talks to helm the project.

Welcome to the Grid (again).

A sequel to Tron: Legacy is finally underway at Disney! The project has faced years of development trials and tribulations but has been championed by Oscar-winning actor Jared Leto (of Morbius and Suicide Squad fame), who will take the lead role. The film, titled Tron: Ares is being penned by Jesse Wigutow (It Runs in the Family), with frequent Disney collaborator Joachim Rønning (Maleficent: Mistress of Evil and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) in talks to direct.

The sci-fi franchise began with the 1982’s ground-breaking Tron, starring Jeff Bridges as Kevin Flynn, a man teleported into his own video game, who must team with security program Tron to survive. The 2010 sequel Tron: Legacy, helmed by Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski, also starred Bridges, in addition to Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde, and included an impressive 1,565 VFX shots, 882 created by Digital Domain (723 in Venice and 159 in Vancouver).

While the team for the film grows, August has been eyed as a start date for shooting in Vancouver. Sean Bailey and Sam Dickerman will serve as executive producers, with Justin Springer (Tron: Legacy), Leto, and Paradox partner Emma Ludbrook, producing along with Jeffrey Silver.
