Invincible Still Unbeatable

Buena Vistas real-life football drama, INVINCIBLE, held the top spot at the box office for the second consecutive week over the Labor Day Holiday weekend ended Sept. 4, 2006. INVINCIBLE caught $12.1M for a cume of $34.7M. Two newcomers occupied second and third place: Lionsgates CRANK and Warner Bros. update of THE WICKER MAN (with vfx by Worldwide FX, Pacific Title and Lava Studio). CRANK pulled in $10.4M compared to THE WICKER MANs $9.6M. Fox Searchlights LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE dipped to fourth while increasing its percentage with $7.6M for a cume of $33.7M. THE ILLUSIONIST is another indie that shot up the chart, following in fifth with $6.3M and $10.3M to date for Yari Film Group Releasing. Sixth place belonged to Sonys TAKKADEGA NIGHTS: THE BALLAD OF RICKY BOBBY, which hauled in another $6.1M for a cume of $136.7M. Climbing back up to seventh with $4.8M and a cume of $62M was the 3D-animated BARNYARD from Paramount Pictures, Nickelodeon Movies and O Ent. Paramounts WORLD TRADE CENTER (with vfx from Double Negative and Animal Logic) settled for eighth with $4.6M and $62.4M. Falling to ninth was Universals ACCEPTED with $4.59M and $28.1M. Buena Vistas STEP UP was the 10th place finisher with $4.5M and a cume of $57.3M.

Meanwhile Buena Vistas PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MANS CHEST (with impressive vfx from ILM) climbed closer to $1B with $969M ($413M domestically and $556M overseas). That places it fourth on the all-time list. Box office information obtained from boxofficemojo.com.
