ILM VFX Legend Dennis Muren to Present and Do Live QnA at VIEW 2020

The 9-time Oscar-winner will discuss his career, unique artistic vision, and answer conference attendee questions at the 21st edition of the annual conference, being held October 18-23, online and on-site in Torino, Italy.

VIEW Conference has confirmed the participation of Industrial Light & Magic’s Dennis Muren at its upcoming 2020 event, running October 18-23.  During an hour-long virtual session, the legendary master of visual effects will talk about his long career and unique artistic vision, as well as respond to questions from conference attendees.

For decades, Muren has been a guiding light in the motion picture industry, and an inspiration to artists of all disciplines. Everyone who takes their seat for this prestigious event is sure to come away feeling illuminated and enthused about future possibilities in the field of visual effects. An integral part of VIEW 2020’s spectacular final day, this special session with Muren is scheduled for the evening of Friday, October 23. It’s an event that no effects aficionado will want to miss.

Winner of nine Academy Awards for Best Achievement in Visual Effects, plus a Technical Achievement Academy Award, Muren began his career at Industrial Light & Magic in 1976 as a miniature effects cameraman on the original Star Wars: A New Hope. Throughout his long career, Muren has remained at the cutting edge of new techniques, championing the use of digital imagery for such seminal films as The Abyss, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, and Jurassic Park. As Senior Visual Effects Supervisor and Creative Director of Industrial Light & Magic, Muren remains at the forefront of the company’s continuing evolution.

“Dennis Muren is a true living legend,” says Conference Director Dr. Maria Elena Gutierrez. “Whenever I hear him speak, I get the same feeling as when I go to a beautiful exhibition, or attend a wonderful concert, or watch an amazing movie. His views are bold and profound, yet at the same time he has great humility and is always willing to learn from young people. Wherever he turns his attention, Dennis always elevates things to a higher level.”

In another programming note, Dr. Gutierrez has also confirmed that Paul Debevec will be presenting a keynote on virtual production. The noted scientist is a Senior Staff Engineer at Google on the Daydream team, and an Adjunct Research Professor of Computer Science in the Viterbi School of Engineering at the University of Southern California, working within the Vision and Graphics Laboratory at the USC Institute for Creative Technologies. Among a litany of awards, Debevec has won two Scientific and Engineering Academy Awards, in 2010 and 2019.

The international VIEW Conference, Italy’s premiere event for Computer Graphics, Interactive & Immersive Media, Animation, Visual Effects, Games, Real-time Rendering, Virtual Production, AI, VR, AR, and Mixed Reality, brings top professionals from those fields to the beautiful baroque city of Torino, Italy for a week of talks, presentations, and workshops.

The 2020 VIEW Conference will take place from October 18 to 23 in Torino’s state-of-the-art OGR venue and virtually. “Because VIEW Conference will be online as well as onsite this year, we are taking advantage of the wonderful opportunity to include remarkable professionals from all over the globe,” says Conference Director Dr. Maria Elena Gutierrez. “VIEW 2020 will be amazing.”
