Hellboy Recruits A Golden Army To Win Box Office

Universal's HELLBOY II: THE GOLDEN ARMY won its opening weekend (ending July 13) with $34.54 million (actuals). The Guillermo del Toro-directed comic book adaptation had vfx by Double Negative, FB-FX, Filmefex Studio, Ghost ApS, Hatch Production, Lip Synch Post and The Senate Visual Effects.

HANCOCK, last week's winner, dropped to the number two slot with $32.08M and a two-week $164.42M gross. The Sony film's vfx were by Furious FX, Lidar Services, Sony Pictures Imageworks and X1fx.

New Line's JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH (vfx by Meteor Studios, Frantic Films, Gentle Giant Studios, Hybride Technologies, Mokko Studio, Persistence of Vision Entertainment, Realities Studio and Rodeo FX) opened in third with $21.018M.

There was still $18.793M worth of love for the robots in fourth placed WALL-E; in three weeks the Disney-Pixar film has made$163.056M.

Universal's WANTED (vfx by Hammerhead, Hydraulx, PacTitle, Hatch FX, CIS Hollywood, Framestore, Ulitka Studio and Tinsley Transfers) placed fifth with $11.996M and doing $112.455M in three weeks.

GET SMART hung in there with a sixth place finish, grossing $7.201M and $111.564 in four weeks. The Warner Bros. film's vfx were by AFX Studios, Cinema Production Services, Eden FX, Gentle Giant Studios, Intrigue, LOOK! Effects, Rising Sun Pictures and RotoFactory.

Fox's MEET DAVE opened a low seventh with just $5.25M. The Eddie Murphy-led sci fi comedy had vfx from CIS Hollywood, Hydraulx, New Deal Studios, Rhythm and Hues and The Third Floor.

Eighth place went to DreamWorks Animation's KUNG FU PANDA (vfx by PDI DreamWorks) with another $4.41M and $202.15M in six weeks in release.

Universal's THE INCREDIBLE HULK came in ninth with $2.324 and $129.9M in five weeks. The film's vfx were by Gentle Giant Studios, Giant Studios, Hydraulx, Image Engine Design, Lidar Services, Lola Visual Effects, Rhythm and Hues and Soho VFX.

And KITT KITTREDGE: AN AMERICAN GIRL (Picturehouse, vfx by Mr. X) came in tenth with $2.303M and $10.992M in four weeks.
