Helen Hill Animated Award Goes to She's A Lady Animator

The Linda Joy Media Arts Society has announced the winner of the inaugural 2007 Helen Hill Animated Award. This award is offered in memory of the life and work of internationally noted filmmaker and artist Helen Hill (1970-2007).

The winner is Heather Harkins for SHE'S A LADY ANIMATOR, which uncovers the secret history of women animators working during World War II, and brings their stories back to Nova Scotia. The Award provides $5,000 support from Power Post, $1,000 support from the Atlantic Filmmakers Cooperative, $1,100 support from the Centre for Art Tapes, $1,000 in support from the New Brunswick Filmmakers' Cooperative, and an additional $500 cash.

Harkins is an independent animator based in Halifax. Her previous films include DON'T BLINK, THE 8 HUSBANDS OF ZSA ZSA GABOR and DUNCAN'S COVE. She is currently on the Board of the Atlantic Filmmakers Cooperative, and is an active independent curator of film presentations internationally. She also teaches children's workshops at film festivals and in the community using hands-on film scratching techniques.

The Linda Joy Awards are the largest nonprofit, independent support-granting organization in Eastern Canada for film and video production. For nearly a quarter century, the Linda Joy Awards have helped further the careers of many filmmakers in Atlantic Canada.
