HBO Announces ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight’ ‘GoT’ Prequel

The series, which will stream on the newly minted Max platform, is set a century before the events of ‘Game of Thrones’ when two unlikely heroes, Ser Duncan the Tall and his diminutive squire Egg, explore Westeros.

HBO announced a new Game of Thrones prequel series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, during yesterday’s Warner Bros. Discovery’s unveiling of the Max streaming service.

The project, previously referred to as Tales of Dunk and Egg, will chronicle a sequence of novellas set about 90 years before the events of Game of Thrones, and will follow the exploits of naïve but courageous Ser Duncan the Tall (Dunk) and his young, diminutive squire Aegon V Targaryen (Egg). Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.

Ironically, Martin claimed in 2017 that Dunk and Egg tales would not be included in HBO’s handful of planned GOT spinoffs, as, “there are at least seven or eight or 10 more [novellas he wanted] to write.” What did HBO offer Martin to change his mind? Maybe a team of fast-typing ghostwriters. While additional Dunk and Egg novella plots are unknown, for those who want a good spoiler before the series release, be sure to read 1998's The Hedge Knight, 2003's The Sworn Sword, and 2010's The Mystery Knight.

The Max series will be written and executive produced by Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin and Ira Parker. Ryan Condal and Vince Gerardis will also executive produce.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight will stream exclusively on Max.
