‘Harry Potter’ Live-Action Series Headed to HBO Max

The new Wizarding World project is extremely early in development, with no writer or talent attached.

Merlin’s beard! Following mutterings of a new Wizarding World project, a new series based on J.K. Rowling’s epic Harry Potter franchise is in the works. According to The Hollywood Reporter, “A Harry Potter live-action TV series is in early development at HBO Max.” Previous franchise speculation claimed the golden trio (Harry, Ron, and Hermione) would return in a sequel film, played by the original cast. This rumor remains unconfirmed, but we do know that the series is, “still in the extremely early stages,” so never say never.

While there is no denying the franchise’s massive and ardent fan base, any decision to release new Harry Potter content could prove problematic due to Rowling’s divisive ideas on gender. No writers or talent are attached to the TV project yet, so it will be interesting to see who’s comfortable getting on board. Will Rowling herself pen the scripts, as she still controls all rights, or will she instead be in charge of choosing the writers? We’re excited to see how this plays out.
