Vulture is reporting that Warner Bros. has approached Guy Ritchie to direct XERXES, based on Frank Miller's graphic novel, which is seen as a sequel to 300. Zack Snyder had been developing the script before moving onto the new SUPERMAN film.

Vulture has purposed two rumor-based theories on why Snyder, who had been expected to direct XERXES, is no longer involved.

The first is that Warners wants him to focus 100% of his energy on SUPERMAN. Word is the script has third act issues. Production on the film has to start before 2013 or the company looses the film rights to the character to the heirs of the Man of Steel creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.

The second is that Warners is not so happy with Snyder's output. WATCHMEN and LEGEND OF THE GUARDIANS: THE OWLS OF GA’HOOLE underperformed. Additionally, test screenings for his first original film SUCKER PUNCH went awful.
