Gradient and Eyetronics to Present Scanning Event at eDIT 9.

Gradient Effects and Eyetronics will present an overview of proprietary scanning techniques at eDIT 9. Filmmakers Festival in Frankfurt, Germany. Scanning For All Purposes will look at how consumer demand for realistic imagery has driven scanning technology. The panel and presentations will be held on Sept. 26 as part of the festivals Media Industry track.

Venice, California-based Gradient Effects will demonstrate a new, cost efficient process that can be utilized in all stages of film pre- and post-production. Using a LIDAR scanner and its own proprietary software, Gradient Effects gathers and prepares comprehensive scan data from large-scale locations. The data is subsequently used in set-design, previs, special effects and final visual effects production, allowing a "plate independent" VFX workflow.

Gradient Effects founders Thomas Tannenberger and Olcun Tan will present examples from past and present projects, detailing the gains in speed and accuracy over previous workflows, as well as advantages for filmmakers in camera positioning, lens selection, realtime previs and overall data management.

Eyetronics, an international provider of high resolution scanning services and animation-ready 3D models for feature films, television, commercials and computer games, will also appear on the panel. Eyetronics president Dirk Callaerts and vp Nick Tesi will discuss the role of full body and facial capture scans and how the process enables filmmakers to deliver extraordinary 3D images for enhanced storytelling in the digital age. Using its proprietary software, Eyetronics recently scanned more than 1,400 Major League baseball players and coaches for game developers Sony Computer Ent. America (SCEA) and 2K Sports.

AWN and VFXWORLD are special media sponsors and will be sponsoring eDward VII, a young filmmakers contest and awards that celebrates the work of talented artists under the age of 30. This years theme is Time Travel.
