Gizmo Helps Netflix with Gifting for the Holidays

Argentinian animation studio Gizmo creates a new CG-animated holiday-themed spot for Netflix to help launch the streaming service’s new line of gift cards.

Argentinian animation studio Gizmo recently created a new CG-animated holiday-themed spot for Netflix via agency Circus to help launch the streaming service’s new line of gift cards.

Completed in just seven-and-a-half weeks, the humorous spot features Karma Billy, who has suffered all his life as “The Worst Gifter” until he discovers Netflix Gift Cards:

“One of the main challenges of this project was to create in 90 seconds twelve small stories where our main character is giving terrible gifts throughout his life,” said Gizmo’s executive producers Emmanuel Verruno and Andrea Bacigalupo. “One of the keys to achieve this was to use a style of exaggerated animation, with marked poses that allow us to quickly decode what was happening in each scene, considering that some of them could not be more than two seconds long.”

The character design was crafted to enable the fast understanding of acting. Gizmo’s artists opted to have characters with very marked and expressive features, and very stylized and flexible bodies that gave them a lot of freedom to generate poses and exaggerate the movements.

For the art direction, Gizmo sought to achieve a particular and distinctive aesthetic aimed at the teen-adult target, utilizing a strong presence of square shapes in the design of both character traits and environments.
