‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ co-writers Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan are the first two names attached to the project, from Sony Pictures Animation, which will mark the third animated show spawned by the franchise.
Netflix is currently in development on a new Ghostbusters animated series, Variety reports.
The project, from Sony Pictures Animation, will be executive produced by Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan of Ghost Corps, Inc. -- co-writers of the 2021 live-action feature Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Reitman is also set to direct.
Writers for the series have not yet been named, and plot details are unknown at this time. Netflix and Ghost Corps, Inc. will oversee production.
Provided it moves ahead, the untitled series would become the third animated show spawned by the Ghostbusters franchise since Ivan Reitman’s original film was released in 1984. The first show to utilize the medium, The Real Ghostbusters, ran for 140 episodes from 1986-1991. A 1997 follow-up, Extreme Ghostbusters, spanned 40 episodes and featured a new generation of college-aged Ghostbusters, schooled in the ways of spectral snatching by series mainstay Dr. Egon Spengler (voiced by Maurice LaMarche).
The new animated series was announced during the celebration of “Ghostbusters Day.” Reitman and Kenan will likely share more updates on other future Ghostbusters projects in the days ahead.
