Gallery Nucleus Presenting ‘Weekends,’ ‘Age of Sail’ This Saturday!

Screenings and panels of Oscar-shortlisted animated short films to be followed by a filmmaker signing session.

With Oscar nominations looming on the horizon, this weekend Gallery Nucleus is hosting film screenings & filmmaker presentations of two shortlisted animated short films: Age of Sail and Weekends. The free, all-ages event will be held at the Alhambra exhibition space 5:00-9:00PM on Saturday, January 5. The first 50 attendees will also receive a free film poster.

Written and directed by Canadian filmmaker and Pixar story artist Trevor Jimenez, Weekends is the story of a young boy shuffling between the homes of his recently divorced parents. Surreal, dream-like moments mix with the domestic realities of a broken-up family in this hand-animated film set in 1980’s Toronto. Qualifying for Oscar submission four-fold, the Annie Award-nominated short has played in more than 66 international festivals to date, winning 22 awards including both the Special Jury Prize and Audience Award at the Annecy International Animation Festival, as well as top prizes at the Warsaw Film Festival, Nashville Film Festival and Edmonton Int’l Film Festival.

Google Spotlight Stories’ Age of Sail, which made its premiere at the Venice Film Festival, was directed by the Oscar-winning filmmaker John Kahrs (Paperman), produced with Chromosphere by Gennie Rim (duet, June, Dear Basketball) and David Eisenmann (Pearl, Son of Jaguar) and executive produced by Karen Dufilho and Jan Pinkava. Set on the open ocean in 1900, Age of Sail is the story of William Avery (played by Ian McShane), an old sailor adrift and alone in the North Atlantic. When Avery reluctantly rescues a teen (Cathy Ang) who has suddenly fallen overboard a passing steamer, Avery finds redemption and hope in his darkest hours. Age of Sail, available now on multiple platforms, was named a Vimeo Staff Pick and has received four Annie Award nominations.

Jimenez will screen his short film Weekends and present a talk on the making the project 5:00-6:30PM, followed by the Google Spotlight Stories team’s Age of Sail 6:30-8:00PM. A one-hour signing session with all the filmmakers will be held in the final hour of the evening.
