Gabriel Harel’s ‘Yùl and The Snake’ Wins 2016 Cartoon d’Or

Cartoon Tributes awarded to Broadcaster of the Year M6 (France), Investor/Distributor of the Year CAKE Entertainment (U.S.), and Producer of the Year Autour de Minuit (France).

TOULOUSE, FRANCE – Cartoon Media has announced that the 2016 Cartoon d'Or has been awarded to Yúl and the Snake, the first short film of French director Gabriel Harel. The award ceremony was celebrated on Thursday, September 15th in the Auditorium Saint-Pierre des Cuisines of Toulouse and the jury was composed of producer Clément Calvet (Superprod, France), director Mark Burton (Aardman Animations, United Kingdom), and director Alessandro Rak (MAD Entertainment, Italy).

Produced by Kazak Productions, this 2D animation film received the André Martin Award Distinction at Annecy in 2015 and was selected in more than 10 film festivals around the world. The film combines drama with fantastic elements and was inspired by the director’s childhood in the Southern Alps region.

Cartoon d’Or is the only Pan-European prize specifically for animated films, and competition in the event is exclusively reserved for short films awarded in one of Cartoon’s partner festivals. The other finalists were: Alike by Daniel Martínez Lara & Rafa Cano Méndez (Spain), Machine by Sunit Parekh (Denmark), Peripheria by David Coquard-Dassault (France) and Under your fingers by Marie-Christine Courtès (France). The finalists were selected from 23 European short films which had won an award at Europe’s major animation festivals over the past year. Harel will receive a 10,000 EUR grant, thanks to the support of Creative Europe-MEDIA.

Cartoon Tributes rewards outstanding achievements, companies or personalities that have had a positive and dynamic influence on the European animation industry. The winners were voted for by 950 animation professionals attending Cartoon Forum 2016.

The winners are:

Broadcaster of the Year: M6 MÉTROPOLE TÉLÉVISION / M6 KID (France)
M6 has been active in children’s program since 1992. It’s children’s blocks, M6 Kid, are intended for children aged 4 to 10, with animation programming oriented towards humor and comedy. The channel also invests in animated feature films either for pre-buy or co-production.
 
Investor/Distributor of the Year: CAKE ENTERTAINMENT (United Kingdom)
CAKE is one of the world’s leading kids’ and family entertainment specialists working with animation and live-action producers to develop, co-produce, commercially position and manage their IP propositions for international market. CAKE handles traditional TV rights as well as digital, online and ancillary commercial rights. London-based CAKE was set up in 2002 and is headed up by Ed Galton and Tom Van Waveren. This is the second time the company is nominated at the Cartoon Tributes.
 
Producer of the Year: AUTOUR DE MINUIT (France)
Autour de Minuit is an animation production and sales company based in Paris. The company has produced the animation show Babioles and co-produced the 26’ TV special A Town called Panic: The Christmas Log, winner Cartoon d’Or 2014. Nowadays the company is working in several feature films and animation shows, including Jean-Michel, Super Caribou and No-No.
