Frederator Studios, Recursion Media Developing ‘The Nameless City’

Animated miniseries based on the graphic novels of Faith Erin Hicks to debut in late 2018.

Frederator Studios announced that it has entered into an agreement with Recursion Media and Eisner Award-winning Faith Erin Hicks to develop an animated series based her The Nameless City graphic novels.

“I have always been a giant nerdy fan of animation,” says Hicks. “In the ’90s whenever a new Disney animated movie came out, I was the kid sitting in the front row on opening night, singing along with every song (belated apologies to the rest of the people watching the movie with me). As an adult, I remain a giant nerdy fan of animation, so to get the chance to see the characters of The Nameless City in animated form is absolutely thrilling.”

Hicks’s graphic novel trilogy centers around two teenagers, withdrawn Kaidu and street-smart Rat, who must work together to save the Nameless City from a tragic 30-year cycle of war.

The trilogy will be developed into a 2D animated miniseries consisting of 12, half-hour episodes that will cover the action of the three books, with the first four episodes set for release in late 2018. First Second Books is publishing the trilogy. The second book, The Stone Heart, hit the shelves April 4.

“Frederator Studios’ cartoon philosophy for nearly 20 years is to support the vision of creators with distinctive points of views,” says Eric Homan, vice president of development at Frederator Studios. “Faith’s wonderful storytelling is just one of the reasons we’re fortunate to be part of this project. We’re eager to follow her creative lead on The Nameless City.’

“What happens when you take these already amazing characters, beautiful backdrops, and make them actually run, jump and live?” says Justin Giritlian of Recursion Media. “We are incredibly fortunate and excited to get the opportunity to do that and can’t think of more perfect partners to collaborate with on this adventure.”
