Frederator Studios Options ‘Parasol Protectorate’ Steampunk Novels

Genre-mashup book series by Gail Carriger follows the exploits of daring Alexia Tarabotti as she unravels a dangerous mystery in paranormal Victorian London.

Fill your dirigible with helium and don those stylish goggles! Gail Carriger’s popular paranormal-meets-steampunk book series Parasol Protectorate has been optioned for an animated series adaptation by Frederator Studios (Adventure Time, Castlevania).

Set in an anachronistic Victorian London (of course), the Parasol Protectorate series follows the exploits of Alexia Tarabotti, who finds herself caught in a mystery concerning London’s paranormal high society alongside the gorgeous Scottish werewolf, Lord Maccon. Oh, and there’s vampires too. Angsty Victorian Twilight? Count us in.

Frederator CEO Michael Hirsh shared his excitement with SyFy Wire, stating, “Parasol Protectorate is a wickedly fun, addictive, and refreshing paranormal adventure and will be an incredibly exciting and wonderful addition to the animation space.”

While excited for the opportunity, Carriger admits she is, “infamous for walking away from a major deal,” yet the nature of animation vs. live-action makes her “cautiously optimistic” she will go forward with the adaptation.

If the series does leave the ground, it will be executive produced by Carriger, Hirsh, and Kevin Kolde.
