Frames Conference Focuses on Game & Toons

The 4th annual Frame (Films, Radio, Audio-visual, Music, Events, Shows) Conference in India is highlighting videogames and animation, reports VARIETY. Running until March 17, 2004, the event is taking place in Mumbai at the Renaissance Hotel and Convention Center. Frames discussions have covered broadcasting, animation, international co-productions and pioneering film marketing.

"Globally, gaming is a $28 billion industry, and India, having established its technical credentials as an IT powerhouse, is favorably positioned to make a mark in this segment," said Amit Mitra, general secretary of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Ficci), a sponsor of the event along with VARIETY.

Indiagames.com CEO Vishal Gondal said: "It's good to see the Indian industry focusing on sectors like gaming. Post the software sector, information and entertainment sector has a very big potential in India. For the SPIDER-MAN mobile game that we just produced, the market continues to be Europe and the U.S. Less than 3% of revenue came from India. With higher PC, Internet, broadband and mobile penetration, many young Indians are getting hooked to games. Companies like Disney, Sony, Marvel, Activision are already working with companies like India Games, and we see many other studios looking at India in a big way."

Electronic Arts president Jon Niermann will be conducting a discussion via satellite. Other speakers include Andy Bird, president, Walt Disney International; Clare Wise, director of the international department, U.K. Film Council International; and John Schreiner, vp of IMAX.
