Forbidden Planet Authorizes Writer

J. Michael Straczynski (CHANGELING) will write the longtime-coming update of sci-fi classic FORBIDDEN PLANET, per THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER. Joel Silver will produce under his Silver Pictures.

James Cameron, Nelson Gidding and Stirling Silliphant have all been attached to varying degrees to the project over the years as it jumped from New Line to DreamWorks to its current home at Warner Bros.

WB quietly acquired the remake earlier this year from DreamWorks, where it was set up with David Twohy to direct. Before that, New Line had it.

FORBIDDEN PLANET, released in 1956, is about an expedition sent from Earth to check on a colony of scientists on a far-away planet, where a scientist and his daughter are the only survivors of an unseen monster terrorizing the planet. The film from director Fred Wilcox and stars Walter Pidgeon, Anne Francis and Leslie Nielsen also introduced us to the character Robbie the Robot.

Straczynski created TV shows BABYLON 5 and JEREMIAH and worked on NINJA ASSASSIN for Silver and the Wachowskis.
