Flip Books Find New Life as Marketing Tool at Licensing Show

Attendees at this week's Licensing International Expo in New York City may flip out, not just over the endless sea of licensed properties on display, but also the way they're being promoted -- with flip books. Manufactured by New York-based Flippies, each flip book delivers two different clips of full-motion video or animation viewable anytime, anywhere with a flip-of-a-thumb.

One flip book featuring clips from the Nick Jr. and Noggin cartoon series, WOW! WOW! WUBBZY!, has quickly become a crowd favorite. The show's exec producer Susan Miller said she loves the thumb-triggered promotional pieces, "flip books allow us to show a little bit of WUBBZY animation in an easy way. No wires, no batteries, no mess."

Originally invented in 1882, flipbooks are one of the earliest forms of interactive multimedia. They create the optical illusion of motion when images -- stacked in sequential stages of movement -- are flipped. "In this age of high-tech interactive multimedia, the simplicity of flip books is not only refreshing, but its illusion is even more captivating than ever," said Jeffrey Kay, president of Flippies. "Creative marketers, like those behind WOW! WOW! WUBBZY!, are beginning to add flip books into the mix as they realize the many different communication benefits for trade shows, mobile tours and other marketing activities."
